Readings by graduating MA/MFA students tomorrow

Please join us Thursday, June 2, at 7 p.m. to hear readings by three Northwestern MA/MFA students who are soon graduating. Aubrey Henretty, Eva DeSouza, and Sarah Jenkins will be reading at the Pancoe Café, 2200 Campus Drive, in Evanston. We’ll have dinner-type snacks and good company. RSVPs are appreciated at wisenberg@northwestern.edu.

In this week’s New Yorker, Louis Menand discusses the value of a college education and reviews several recent books on that subject. He includes some historical data on shifts in availability of higher education in this country. College may be a commonly-acquired rite of passage these days, and critical thinkers are questioning the rate of return on the financial investment. It’s a good debate, but I still feel strongly the draw of learning for its own sake, for intangible or unmeasurable benefits to ourselves and society, at whatever cost we can manage. I also recognize that life’s learning need not, and should not, be restricted to the formality of a classroom. Let us know your thoughts if you wish to comment.

Congratulations to our MA/MFA graduates.
