Great local events
Poets & Writers has a new online feature profiling various cities for their literary happenings, beginning with Chicago. Zach Dodson’s article highlights monthly spoken word events at our local bars. The Upcoming Events page seems a bit thinly populated but perhaps will grow.
Two annual events for book fans are coming up in Chicago. First, the Printers' Ball, founded by Poetry magazine, takes place Friday, July 29, from 6-11 PM at 1104 S. Wabash. Offerings include readings, video, music performances, free magazines, and various displays and demonstrations. It’s hard to sum up all the different activities, not to mention free beer and food. Last year it seemed to be winding down by 10 PM, when we boarded a free shuttle bus to the after-party. This year’s after-party is at Villains Chicago.
Also, the Newberry Library Book Fair opens to the public on Thursday, July 28 and continues through Sunday, July 31. This used book sale is legendary for its scope (over 120,000 books) and great finds.
