What to Do When It Happens

Let’s leave our living rooms for the wolves.
When the sky opens into whiteness
and comes down over us, why not go out into it?
Why not go out into that Great Change?
We’ll leave our houses. Why stay?
The world outside will lope and gallop
indoors at the first opportunity.
Imagine the inconvenience of it! Herds of deer
grazing on our carpets; moss, fungus
colonizing the countertops. Already
in the shower you can hear the steady rain.
Let’s go outside, then. Let’s pitch our tents,
make a home of the vacant woods.
We’ll ice our drinks with snowfall.
We’ll reconsider the wheel.
